Logansport
Cass County
Carousel
Riverside Park
Logansport is home
to a beautifully restored rare Dentzel carousel that
is meticulously maintained. It is housed in a gorgeous pavilion. The carousel
dates to 1902 and possibly much earlier. The three-row, stationary, menagerie
machine with an operational ring arm is populated with 32 horses, many of which
are prancers, 3 giraffes, 3 goats, 1 lion, 1 tiger, 3 deer, and 3 chariots, one
of which can accommodate a wheelchair. The scenery panels are beautiful. The
center pole is from a ship mast! The carousel is one of 3 remaining stationary Dentzel carousels. The carousel has been designated as a
National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The carousel was
at Robison Park in Fort Wayne from 1902 to 1919 after which it moved to Spencer
Park and remained until 1962. It has been at Riverside at Logansport since
1962. The first three years at Riverside Park, the carousel was stored and did
not operate. In 1972, Frank Callipo and the Jaycees
raised enough money to purchase the carousel and form the Cass County Carousel,
Inc., a non-profit organization. The carousel was completely restored in 1993
by Carousel Works in Mansfield, Ohio.
The band organ is
a 1999 Stinson.
We wish to thank
Michelle Nolen and Ernie Gasho for taking time to show us the Cass County
Carousel.
The carousel is
open during the summer from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day.

The Children’s
Museum of Indianapolis
The Children’s
Museum of Indianapolis is a most impressive museum filled with works of art,
exhibits, and areas of play. We were especially impressed with the extensive
dinosaur exhibit known as the Dinosphere at the
museum. Some of the specimens are from the museum’s own dinosaur and fossil
digs in Wyoming. There is something for children and adults of all ages at the
museum.
The carousel at
the museum is a 3-row, gorgeous 1917 menagerie with Dentzel
figures on a Mangels frame. The carousel is meticulously restored and
maintained. The carousel is populated with 17 jumping and 14 standing horses
along with 3 deer, 3 goats, 3 giraffes, 1 tiger, 1 lion, and 2 chariots.
Before arriving at
The Children’s Museum in 1969, the carousel was at Broad Ripple Park in
Indianapolis from 1917 to 1956 and at the Indianapolis Parks Department
from1956 to 1969.
The band organ is
a Wurlitzer 146-A.
The
carousel has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and is on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Parking at the
museum is free!
We wish to thank
Kimberly Harms Robinson for taking time to show us the carousel and point out
special exhibits at the museum.
