Myrtle Beach
Pavilion Carousel
Broadway at the Beach.

Myrtle Beach is
home to a stunningly gorgeous Herschell-Spillman 3-row, park model menagerie
carousel. Although we did not take a census, the National Carousel Association lists
the platform population as 12 Jumping Horses, 11 Standing Horses including at
least two prancers, 27 Menagerie Animals (2 Elephants, 1 Tiger, 2 Giraffes, 1
Camel, 1 Deer, 2 Frogs, 2 Zebras, 1 Dragon, 2 Dogs, 2 Pigs, 2 Roosters, 2
Ostriches, 2 Cats, 1 Lion, 1 Stork, 1 Goat, 2 Mules), and 2 chariots. The
elephants may be from the United States Carousel Company. They do closely
resemble the elephants on the Flower Guild’s carousel in Washington, D. C. The
carousel has three levels with the two upper levels serving as the home for the
figures.
Although the
original location of the carousel is not known, it was moved from Oxford Lake
Park in Anniston, Alabama in 1950 to the now defunct Myrtle Beach Pavilion and Park
where it remained until 2006. After being placed in storage for one year, it
was re-assembled and opened at Broadway at the Beach
in 2007.
The carousel is
beautifully maintained and housed in year-round pavilion and is open most days
year-round.
The
band organ is a Bruder which uses Wurlitzer rolls.
We
thank Lilly for allowing us on the platform to take photos.
