Just 20 miles north of Salt Lake City in Farmington, Utah is Lagoon
Amusement Park where resides a beautiful, three-row Herschell-Spillman
menagerie carousel. The carousel is populated by 23 jumpers, 19 menagerie
animals including 1 cat, 1 dog, 1 lion, 1 pig, 1 stork, 1 tiger, 1 deer, 1 dog,
1 dragon, 1 goat, 1 llama, 2 roosters, 2 zebras, 2 mules, 2 frogs, 1 very small
swan and 1 very small bear for very young children, 1 chariot, 1 rocking
chariot (bench), and 1 rotating lover’s tub. We have never seen carousel
animals like the swan and bear designed for such young, small children. Great
idea!! The carousel is excellently, beautifully, and meticulously maintained.
The National Carousel Association believes that the carousel was
manufactured circa 1913 whereas Lagoon believes the carousel was manufactured in 1893.
The later date seems more accurate since the design of the carousel is more
consistent with other 1910-1915 Herschell-Spillman
carousels. In addition, the Herschell-Spillman Company
was not formed until 1903 when Allan Herschell and
Edward Spillman purchased the financially troubled Armitage-Herschell
company.
The carousel resided in Santa Monica, California from 1913 to 1918 when
it moved to Lagoon.
Since 2012, the carousel has been on the National Register of Historic
Places.
Lagoon Amusement Park offers a variety of entertainment: kiddie and
thrill rides, a beach, live entertainment, and Pioneer Village. The park is
beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean. It is a beautiful place to visit
and spend the day.
