Harold Warp Pioneer Village

We first visited Harold Warp Village in about 2019 to see their portable 1890s Armitage-Herschell carousel. Contrary to publications by the National Carousel Association and the Pioneer Village, the carousel had not run for several years and was deteriorating sitting in a poorly constructed and dilapidated “building” exposing the carousel to the elements. We were appalled.

Recently, we re-visited the Pioneer Village after hearing that the carousel had been completely refurbished. While visiting the Village and Museum, we learned a lot from Brad Roberts who was intimately involved with the restoration.

The carousel is a two-row originally steam driven track carousel with 17 jumpers, some menagerie animals (deer, giraffe, zebra, etc.), and two chariots. The steam engine is on display. The travelling carousel was in Pontiac, Illinois from 1905 to 1955 when it was acquired by Harold Warp Village.

When we arrived at the carousel, there was yellow tape and “do not enter“ signs around the carousel building. We ignored the tape and signs and went in anyways!

The 1913 Herschell-Spillman 2-row carousel at beautiful Cody Park was once a travelling carousel until it landed in North Platte in 1951. The recently refurbished carousel has 24 jumpers, some of which are kiddie horses, and 2 chariots, one of which is a stagecoach made by park personnel. The carousel is housed in an all-weather pavilion. The music is recorded, although there is a non-functional Stinson 29M on site. Rides are $1.00. The carousel operates during the summer.

Cody Park is beautiful and well-kept and offers many diverse, family-oriented activities. There are facilities for swimming and athletics along with picnic shelters and a playground and concession stand. Don’t miss the zoo area and the miniature train.
